Thomson designed a glass tube that was partly evacuated, i.e. all of the air had been drained out of the constructing. He then applied a high electrical voltage at both end of the tube between two electrodes. He noticed a particle stream (ray) popping out of the negatively charged electrode (cathode) to the constructive charged electrode (anode).
Generally, anode attracts the anions and cathode attracts the cations, which has led to call these electrodes as such. “In which path does electrical current move?”.
